Danish telecommunications operator TDC is again interested in privatization of Cesky Telecom. IT minister Vladimir Mlynar confirmed discussion with representatives of TDC. TDC tried unsuccessfully to privatize the company, first in 1995 and then in the last year, when it offered USD 1.82bn for the government’s stake in consortium with Deutsche Bank. However, complicated contracts between the NPF and TelSource blocked the sale. TDC is active in the Czech Republic through alternative telecommunications operator Contactel and it was shareholder in Bivideon, which controls Ceske Radiokomunikace. The government plans to start Cesky Telecom’s privatization next year and complete it in 2005.
In line with our expectations, the departure of TelSource from Cesky Telecom drove an interest in privatization of the company. Complicated contracts between the NPF and TelSource made the privatization difficult. Domestic financial group PPF or CVC Equity Partners have already indicated in interest in Cesky Telecom. We expect that several other investors would emerge, e.g. Vodafone or France Telecom (Orange), which are already present in neighboring countries and could be interested particularly in mobile business.
