Submarine cable system between Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands (GC-LNZ
This project will address the need for connectivity in the Canary Islands, by deploying a new ring of submarine cables between the islands of Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.
Locations |
Spain: Canary Islands – Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura |
Cable length |
553 km |
Project start - end date (duration) |
(45 months) |
What will it provide?
These new submarine cables will provide necessary replacements to the existing cable systems, which are approaching end of life. They will offer robusteness and redundancy, and will contribute to the diversification of the submarine telecommunications infrastructures, as well as to improving competition in the submarine telecommunications markets in the Canary Islands.
How will it work?
The project will comprise two cables, grouped in one system, interconnecting in places with the existing Canalink terrestrial fibre infrastructure.
Cable system 1, the main route, will start from the eastern part of Gran Canaria and will employ a branching unit (BU) in order to reach the islands of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote independently, and connect their respective capitals.
Cable system 2 would be the redundant route that would link Fuerteventura and Lanzarote with Gran Canaria by two completely diversified routesto provide the system with great robustness against cuts. In this case, the north of Gran Canaria would be connected with Corralejo, Fuerteventura, and Playa Blanca, Lanzarote.
This project is a follow up from Call 1 Canary Subcab study.
How will it be built?
The project will define the initial shore-end locations options, get feedback from the responsible authorities, decide on the final cable landing stations’ locations, and encompass comprehensive marine operations from survey and installation to burial and inspection, ensuring the successful deployment of the infrastructure.
The cable type employed will be an unrepeated system with a full range of protection and armour to meet all types of seabed conditions.
It will be designed for a lifetime of 25 years and will deploy 8 fibre pairs, and a total new capacity of 308 Tbps.
How is it financed?
The project to deploy new submarine cables in the Canary Islands has a total budget of €34 million, of which €23 million funded under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Digital programme.
Who is involved?
The project to deploy new submarine cables in the Canary Islands is being undertaken by Canarias Submarine Link / Canalink, as coordinator.
