Czech voters elected new regional councils and five senators

  In the regional council elections, 8 269 candidates were standing in the election. The ANO movement won the highest number of seats (292). The total turnout was 32.91%; four years ago, 37.95% of voters cast their votes in the regional council elections. The highest turnout was in the Jihočeský Region (36.66%), the lowest one was in the Ústecký Region (28.13%).

The average age of elected councillors is 50.77 years. The oldest councillor is 76 years old, the youngest one is 20 years old. In regional councils, 540 men and 145 women will have a seat.

Highest numbers of preferential votes were won by Jan Grolich (46 854) in the Jihomoravský Region , Martin Kuba (38 544) in the Jihočeský Region, and Petra Pecková (18 289) in the Středočeský Region.

169 candidates were standing in the election for 27 seats of senators. “On Saturday, five candidates were elected to the Senate. A historical record from 1996 from the very first senatorial elections was thus broken; at that time, four candidates were elected in the first round. However, at that time, senators were elected to all of the 81 senatorial districts,” Eva Krumpová, the First Vice President of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), notes. The following were elected: Pavel Fischer, Jana Mračková Vildumetzová, Martin Bednář, Petr Vícha, and Jiří Čunek . The closest difference between the candidates before the second round of the senatorial elections is in the electoral district No 26 – Prague 2 and makes 362 votes.

“On behalf of the Czech Statistical Office, I would like to express thanks to members of election commissions and employees of our Office at points of handover for the work they have done and that was even more demanding than usual especially in areas affected by recent floods. I can state that the finished elections were successfully dealt with without serious problems,” Eva Krumpová evaluated the progress of the elections.

Data from the last electoral ward were taken over by the Czech Statistical Office on Saturday at 9:22 p.m. On Monday morning, the voting results will be negotiated by the State Electoral Committee. After their approval, they will be published in the Collection of Laws of the Czech Republic. The second round of the elections to the Senate of the Parliament of the Czech Republic will be held on 27 and 28 September 2024.
