Prague Stock Exchange started new week with a correction of its previous gains. The PX-D index dropped by 2.1% to 1,189.3 points in the morning part of the session driven by sell-off of major Czech blue-chips. Also the worsened sentiment on foreign markets also pushed the Czech equities lower. Investors are selling shares with looming war with Iraq. They are moving their funds to more secure assets like bonds. Unipetrol (-3.1%) and Cesky Telecom (-2.4%), which pushed the market up last week, significantly underperform today. Komercni banka and CEZ both slide by 1.8%.

European shares are again driven lower by the insurance sector. Weaker corporate news has again undercut confidence for the sector. ING announced that it made an impairment charge of EUR 13.1bn for 2002. French AGF announced sharp drop in 2002 profits also due to higher provisions. Investors are focused on Iraq issue after USA said that UN has 24 hour to approve new resolution on Iraq.
