In 2023, 868 700 people in the EU were employed as authors, journalists or linguists. The number of people employed in these professions decreased by 2.5% compared with 2022.

In 2023, Germany employed the largest number of authors, journalists or linguists (237 600 people), followed by France (92 800), Spain (74 200), Italy (72 300) and Poland (69 600).

Compared with 2022, the number of people employed in these fields grew sharply in Luxembourg (+67.5%), Latvia (+43.1%) and Lithuania (+22.9%).

The largest relative decreases were recorded in Cyprus (-28.4%), Portugal (-27.4%) and Slovenia (-23.4%).

76 328 enterprises in the publishing industry in 2023

In 2023, there were 76 328 enterprises in the books and periodicals publishing industry.

Most of these enterprises were in France (23 648), Spain (5 910), Germany (5 374), Czechia (5 349) and Italy (4 393).
