Did you know that the EU’s 9.1 million farms used 38.4% of the EU’s total land area for agriculture in 2020? Or that the EU produced 272 million tonnes of cereals in 2023? Were you aware that, on average, each person in the EU spent €3 980 on food, beverages and catering services in 2022?

You can find this information in the 2024 edition of Key Figures on the European food chain. The publication provides a selection of key indicators that are displayed through clear visualisations and accompanied by a short description of the main findings.

Key figures on the European food chain - 2024 edition

This publication offers statistical insights into trends and developments within the 3 main parts of the chain:

  • production, including primary agricultural and fisheries production and the processing of food and beverages;
  • distributive activities, such as trade, transport and distribution, wholesaling, and the retailing and serving of food and beverage;
  • the human consumption of food and beverages and selected environment issues (for example, fertiliser and pesticide use, greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture, and waste within the food chain).
