The Czech Representative Office in Ramallah in cooperation with the Austrian Hospice of the Holy Family in Jerusalem and the Magnificat Institute of Music in Jerusalem organised a week of masterclasses led by the young Czech pianist Matouš Zukal. The musical week was crowned by a joint concert of the Czech artist with talented students of the Magnificat Institute at the beautiful historical premises of the Austrian Hospice.
Matouš Zukal is one of the most promising artists of the young Czech piano generation. Under his insightful supervision, students of the Magnificat Institute of Music in Jerusalem practiced and rehearsed the works of Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, Scarlatti, Chopin, Liszt, Mendelssohn, Debussy, and others. Established in 1995 by decision of the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land, the Magnificat Institute brings together about 180 students and 24 teachers of different backgrounds in their shared passion for music in the heart of the Old City.
After an intensive week of classes and diligent rehearsals, the students joined efforts with their Czech teacher in a concert kindly hosted by the Austrian Hospice of the Holy Family in Jerusalem. Melodies of Czech and European composers filled its halls as Matouš Zukal performed breathtaking renditions of Janáček’s “In the Mists”, Smetana’s Sonata in G Minor, and selected preludes of Debussy. The enthusiastic students were delighted to perform their pieces and encouraged in their musical journey. The audience was captivated by the dedication and vivacious energy of the young aspiring performers brought together in this project within the Year of Czech Music.
