MUSICA TRANSALPINA 28-member baroque ensemble Musica Transalpina presents a memorial concert featuring the West Coast premiere of the Requiem in A Major by Heinrich Biber, who preceded Mozart at Salzburg Cathedral by nearly a century. This enormous Requiem in the quintessentially “Colossal Baroque” style of Salzburg Cathedral was most likely composed for the obsequies of Biber’s elegantly-educated patron, the prince-archbishop Maximilian Gandolf Cardinal von Kuenburg, in May of 1687.
Musica Transalpina is a professional ensemble dedicated to the research & historically-informed performance of baroque sacred music. Musica Transalpina specializes in discovering & performing the magnificent but forgotten repertoire of historically-signifiant composers who are largely unknown in the United States. While the literature they focus on is presently obscure, their goal is to bring the forgotten masterpieces of the early baroque fully into the mainstream by presenting world-class performances of large-scale liturgical music from the seventeenth century. Their mission is to cultivate local, Southern California-based talent to make Los Angeles the leading city for the serious study & performance of early music in the nation.
