Czech violinist Josef Špaček has been called the discovery of the century. His versatility, virtuosity and beauty of sound make Špaček a phenomenon on the concert stage. Until this season, he could rarely be heard in the Netherlands. This is now changing. Not only is he artist in residence with the Residentie Orkest, at the Edesche Concertzaal on Saturday 13 April he will play together with Ukrainian pianist and artist in residence pianist Dmytro Choni.

Špaček and Choni will take the audience on an extraordinary musical journey through chamber music with pieces such as Beethoven's surprising Fourth Violin Sonata, op. 23, Schumann's Romanzen, op. 94 and Prokofiev's Second Violin Sonata, op. 94b. Špaček's "astonishing athletic ability" (The Scotsman) and his "spirited timbre" (The Telegraph) are beautifully expressed in these works.

Beethoven, Schumann and Prokofiev

With Beethoven, everything always had to be different. So too in his Fourth Violin Sonata. Whereas the first three violin sonatas were still more or less in line with tradition, in his Fourth Violin Sonata Beethoven treads new paths. Schumann's Romanzen, op. 94 form a beautiful contract with Beethoven's dramatics. Schumann wrote them in 1849 during one of the most productive periods of his career. The loving tone of these pieces is perfectly in keeping with their purpose: Schumann composed them as a Christmas present for Clara, who was not only his wife but also his muse, and support and companion. Špaček and Choni complete the recital with Prokofiev's relaxed Second Violin Sonata.

With his virtuosity, technical balance and beauty of sound, Josef Špaček has emerged as one of the leading violinists of his generation. He studied under the legendary violinist Itzhak Perlman, among others. For the first ten years of his career, as the youngest concertmaster ever, he was first violinist of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. From 2016, he focused on his solo career that took him to major international concert stages. For instance, Špaček was heard as a soloist with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin and the Orchestre de Paris. In chamber music, he regularly collaborates with musicians such as pianist Yuja Wang, cellist Clemens Hagen and violinist Gil Shaham.

"This young man may well become one of the most outstanding pianists of the twenty-first century," writes David's Review Corner about Dmytro Choni. This season, Dmytro continues his unstoppable march towards the world's top. What makes him so special as a pianist? Programmer Piano of the Edesche Concert Hall Roland Aalbers is clear: "What strikes me about Choni is his natural way of making music and his great affinity with very diverse musical styles. Combined with flawless technique, he thus manages to breathe new life into every composition."

In addition to the violin recital with Josef Špaček, Dmytro Choni can be heard with cellist Julian Steckel on 25 May.
